Match Sampler and Event Info Day

  • Saturday, June 30, 2018
  • 9:00 AM - 2:00 PM
  • Clubhouse, Ranges 0,2,3,5,7

On June 30th from 9AM to 2PM, DPRC will have nearly every one of the matches we hold set up to try, as well as representatives from most of our regular events! If you have been wondering what this match or that event is all about, this is your best chance to come out and see and experience what they are all about. In some cases, there will be a fee just to cover your ammunition cost, but most are free to try, and all are free to check out and talk to the event directors. We aren't running full matches, but you will be able to see the match target arrays and shoot to get a flavor for how each match works.

If you haven't been taking advantage of all the events DPRC has to offer, come check this out. If you have, then here is a great opportunity to introduce people to the shooting sports. This is open to all members, and regular guest rules apply, which means you can bring up to three guests per member to check out what we have available. This would be a great time to bring a nephew or niece or grandchild, the neighbors, a coworker, or anyone at all that might be open to an interest in shooting. Bring them out! The only way we'll still have our 2A rights in 20 years is if all of us are making sure that the next generations care.

Here is what we are planning - there is something for everyone:

Range 0 - Precision Rimfire

Range 2 - Bullseye (Precision) Pistol, and Ransom Rest Demo

Range 3 - Women of Steel

Range 5 - 2-Gun Rimfire

Range 7 - Vintage Military Rifle, Single Shot, High Power

Clubhouse - Youth Air Rifle, DPRC Education, and Venturing Crew

At at 11AM, until it runs out, lunch will be served to members and guests.

Here is a little information on each event, or click the event links above for even more info. All of these matches and events are open to the public. All of the events will have firearms available to try them out, as well as ammo. There may be a charge just to cover ammo cost if you use our ammo. You are free to bring your own firearms and ammo as well - read up on the events on our website if you want to do this. Each match or event director will determine whether it is appropriate and safe for that activity.

Precision Rimfire

Precision Rimfire competitions occur every 2nd Sunday of the month, and are designed to provide a safe, FUN, accessible, yet challenging precision rimfire match for both novice and experienced level shooters with varying types of rimfire rifles. We shoot at 50, 100, and 150 yards, at small steel knockdown targets that range in size from 1" to 6" tall. We will have rifles available, but you are welcome to bring your scoped 22 rifle and subsonic (<1100 FPS) ammo to try. The matches take about an hour to shoot, as we rotate shooters in and out all morning and early afternoon.

Bullseye (Precision) Pistol

Bullseye Pistol, or Precision Pistol as the NRA is now calling it, is the modern version of the original pistol shooting sports.   As the name implies the idea is to be as precise as possible when shooting at relatively smaller targets.   We stand still and shoot at stationary targets, unlike most other popular pistol shooting sports which involve at least some movement.    The 3 targets we shoot range from slow fire, which allows up to 10 minutes to fire 10 shots,  down to rapid fire which allows 10 seconds to fire 5 aimed shots.   We start each match shooting a 22, and some competitors shoot that all the way through.   Most others use a 45 caliber pistol for the remainder of the match.   Come check us out on range 2 during the match sampler event.

Ransom Rest Demo

Also on Range 2, we will be showing off the new Ransom Master Series Combo Pistol Rest that the club acquired for member use. From the Ransom Rest website: "It is a precision, passive device that holds, fires, and recoils as nearly like the human hand as possible. It eliminates the human inconsistencies that ordinarily make handgun testing unreliable. The Ransom Master Series Rest is the only machine rest to successfully accomplish the goal of precise, repeatable handgun accuracy testing, and it has become the gun industry’s international standard." Come out and learn about the Ransom Rest and how to take advantage of it for high accuracy shooting. We have grip inserts for many popular handguns.

For members, we will have orientation classes for the Ransom Rest at 10AM, 11AM, noon, and 1PM on Range 2. The orientation class is required to be able to access and use the Ransom Rest when you come out to DPRC.

Women of Steel

The Women of Steel event is normally just for women, but on Match Sampler Day, we’ll also be giving you men a chance to do some of the tactical drills our women do each month at our events. Women, of course, will be welcomed that day too!

The Women of Steel meet the first Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to noon for a wonderful time of learning and practice with other women to help them feel more confident handling and shooting their handguns. Our aim is to help women be strong, prepared, and trained with their handguns.

2-Gun Rimfire

Second Saturdays each month we have a 2-Gun rimfire match. Usually 3 stages of rifle, and 3 of pistol. Each stage is 5-7 steel targets, and is fast! You shoot each stage 5 times, drop the slowest time, and add them up for score. Then we repaint the targets and the next shooter is up.

Vintage Military Rifle

Several times a year we have a match for vintage military rifles. M1 Garands, M1903 Springfields, and other vintage military rifles compete in matches of prone and standing fire. Come and check it out - if you've never fired a Garand, here is your chance to fire one of the club's rifles!

Single Shot

Several single shot matches are scheduled throughout the year (see schedule on the website at the link above). These are fun matches using single shot rifles like the “Springfield Trapdoor”, the 1874 Sharps, the Remington Rolling Blocks, Stevens, Ballards, Maynards, Winchester 1885 High Walls, etc.”, and of course reproductions of such representative of the 1860s to 1898.  There are separate divisions for lever guns, bolt and scoped rifles. See if you can hit the targets with a rifle way older than you are!

High Power Rifle

We have several High Power rifle matches scheduled this year. The next one is coming up soon on July 14th. High power rifle competition is for M1 Garand, M-14/M1A, M-110, and M-16/AR-15 rifle in military configurations, shot from standing, sitting and prone positions.

Youth Air Rifle

On the 2nd and 4th Thursday evenings each month, we have indoor 10 meter air rifle for youth shooters. This is a great opportunity to bring youth and introduce them to shooting, and grow their skills as they learn precision air rifle shooting, and it is out of the wind and weather too. Youth can get their 4H or NC Wildlife Air Rifle certifications also.

DPRC Education

The DPRC Education program brings in local and national level trainers for classes ranging from NC concealed carry and the basic NRA courses up to advanced defensive and competitive shooting. Come and find out more about what we offer!

Venturing Crew

DPRC sponsors a Venturing Crew that focuses on the shooting sports, as well as outdoor and service activities. Venturing is a co-ed scouting program that is part of the Boy Scouts of America for youth ages 14-21. The proceeds of the drinks and snacks available in the clubhouse support the Venturing Crew, so if you are hungry or thirsty at the range, please grab something.

We are looking forward to seeing a great turnout of club members and guests! Please thank the event directors and other volunteers when you come out.
