NRA Basic Personal Protection Outside The Home Course

Course Overview:

This course teaches students the essential knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for avoiding dangerous confrontations and for the safe, effective, and responsible use of a concealed pistol for self-defense outside the home.

Equipment Required:

  • Ear and eye protection (electronic muffs preferred)

  • Strong side holster IWB or OWB (no cross draws or shoulder rigs; women's holster purses are acceptable)

  • No pocket guns or holsters; students will present and reholster the gun approximately 100 to 150 times, requiring a non-collapsible holster.

  • Concealment garment (light jacket, shirt, or vest)

  • Comfortable shoes with sufficient support (no sandals or flip-flops)

  • Semi-automatic pistol or revolver with at least 220 rounds of factory ammunition 

  • Two extra functional magazines (for semi-autos) or speed-loaders (for revolvers)

  • Comfortable clothing; knee pads (optional but recommended)

  • Dual magazine carrier (optional but highly recommended)

  • Hydration system or bottled water

  • Optional items: hat, sunscreen, bug repellent, rain gear (class is on rain or shine; be prepared for the elements).

More Details:
Prerequisite: This course is designed for adult individuals who are legally eligible to possess a firearm and have completed the NRA Basics of Personal Protection In The Home Course or can demonstrate equivalent defensive pistol skills through a pre-course evaluation. Participants should also understand the legal concepts surrounding firearm use in self-defense and adhere to both general and specific safety principles.

Course Structure:
    • Level One: focusing on the fundamental knowledge and skills needed for carrying, storing, and using a firearm safely and effectively for personal protection outside the home. Includes several hours on the range and approximately 100 rounds of ammunition.

    • Level Two: Optional  session that includes advanced shooting skills and requires approximately 200 rounds of ammunition.

  • Materials Provided: Students will receive the NRA Guide to the Basics of Personal Protection Outside The Home handbook, the NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, and appropriate course completion certificates.

  • Certification: Upon completion of the class, students will receive a completion certificate and the NRA Defensive Pistol II patch.

Important: No live ammunition is permitted in the classroom under any circumstances.
