NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting Course

The NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting (BOPS) course is a comprehensive, hands-on program designed for new and experienced shooters alike. This nationally recognized course teaches the essential knowledge, skills, and attitude needed for safe and effective pistol use.

Instruction is conducted in both the classroom and on the range by an NRA-Certified Instructor, emphasizing safety, proper technique, and confidence-building.

Course Topics Include

  • Basic firearm safety rules

  • Safe firearm storage

  • Pistol parts and how they work

  • Semi-automatic pistols: parts & operation

  • Revolvers: parts & operation

  • Double-action vs. single-action pistols

  • Ammunition fundamentals & popular pistol cartridges

  • Fundamentals of pistol shooting

  • Proper shooting positions

  • Common pistol shooting errors and corrections

  • Clearing common pistol stoppages

  • Selecting pistols, ammunition, and accessories

  • Cleaning and maintaining your pistol

  • Live-fire shooting activities and skill development

Students will complete live-fire training and a nationally standardized shooting qualification under direct instructor supervision.
